A signed handscroll of simple yet charming drawings depicting playing cards, toys, cooking implements, and a variety of other everyday objects, by the celebrated artist Shibata Zeshin (1807–1891). A signed postscript added to the mounting by Zeshin's pupil Shōji Chikushin authenticates the work as "genuine brushwork by my late teacher, the venerable Zeshin". The folds in the paper suggest that the drawings were originally in orihon (accordion-book) format. A delightful survival, preserving a glimpse of the unpretentious brushwork of one of Japan's foremost nineteenth-century artists.

One paper handscroll, painted on one side, complete. Mounting presumably added later by Chikushin. Creases, light stains, and a little soiling to original paper. Rubbing to daisen title panel and a few small nicks to hyōshi. Housed in wooden box. 27.1 x 320.5 cm when unfurled.
