[Untitled painting with three fruit studies]

[Japan, ca. mid- to late-Meiji period (1870s-1890s?)]. In manuscript.

A brush-and-ink painting comprising three studies of fruit, one bearing the signature "Chikushin", referring to Shōji Chikushin (1854–1936), together with two further studies signed with unidentified two-character gō. The association with Chikushin suggests a connection with the artistic circle of Shibata Zeshin, although the identities of the remaining artists have yet to be established. A subtle work that merits further study.

Three painted illustrations on one sheet of paper. Paper folded in three sections, creased thus. Light marks and minor browning to paper. Numerous creases, predominantly to right margin. Small tear to foot of right-hand side. 34.2 x 62.1 cm.
