Meisho Edo Hyakkei: Asakusa Kinryūzan [One Hundred Famous Views of Edo: Kinryūzan Temple in Asakusa]
[Utagawa], Hiroshige [illustrated by].
[Tōkyō: Uoya Eikichi, ca. 1856?].
A famous view by Hiroshige depicting the snowy approach from Kaminarimon Gate to the grounds of Sensōji Temple in Asakusa. The first print in the winter section of the Meisho Edo Hyakkei series, it is celebrated for its contrast of red and white, colours traditionally associated with auspiciousness and the renewal of the New Year. This impression is unusual for its light blue background, rather than the more typical grey. One of Hiroshige's most famous and celebrated designs, in a particularly icy palette.
One leaf, woodblock-printed on one side, complete. A little faded and creased, with a few small marks. Light soiling to extremities. Left and right margins trimmed and professionally replaced with washi. 35.6 x 23 cm.
