A colour stencil-printed montage depicting scenes from traditional papermaking villages. The images show papermaking tools and sheets of paper drying in the sun, accompanied by a Japanese poem on the winter process of making washi (Japanese paper). As papermaking requires abundant supplies of clean, running water, villages were often situated in mountain valleys. Freshly made sheets were brushed onto wooden boards and lined up along the riverbanks to dry, with the surrounding mountains forming a picturesque backdrop. A simple but appealing tribute to the traditional craft of papermaking by an unidentified artist.

One stencil-printed sheet, complete. Several creases, foxing to extremities. Pigments faded. 39 x 46.7 cm
