The official record of Japan's first Antarctic expedition, compiled by the Nankyoku Tanken Kōenkai (Antarctic Expedition Supporters' Association) from the writings of expedition members including Shirase Nobu. Nankyoku-ki was published after the personal records of Tada Keiichi and Shirase Nobu, and is typically dubbed the "official account" of the expedition. The work features many photographic illustrations, one fold-out map in colour, and the tipped-in name card of General Nogi Maresuke (1849-1912), a central figure in the Russo-Japanese War. The preface was composed by Marquess Ōkuma Shigenobu (1838-1922), the chairman of the Antarctic Expedition Supporters' Association. Perhaps the most important record of the Japanese expedition.

One Western-bound volume, complete. Original boards a little scuffed and rubbed. Adhesive repairs to textblock head and foot. Binding a little shaken, starting to crack. Considerable repairs to endpaper gutters. Tears (one repaired) to creases of fold-out map. Stamped number to map verso. Offsetting, browning, and occasional foxing internally. Sticker removal to lower free endpaper. 8, 4, 11, 468 p. 22.6 x 16 cm.
